Not sure of the significance of "East London" in 8D, is there a DD going on that I can't parse or is it just a reference to somewhere a bit hotter?

East London denotes South Africa. It is indeed a DD clue.

I'm struggling to get on with the lower half, so would appreciate a steer on 24d.
Also another push on 'central part' in 27d!

24: We B + a word for something dead people are laid to rest on (winding sheet is a shroud) The rest is the def with an wrong letter in "bog"

27 Central part = the substance, essence of something (also part of a fruit)

Thanks Loge, I have 24 now but don't see what big becomes or how the definition works really.
A while ago I had tried LA plus centre of earth/apple, but can't find that word anywhere?

lumen - You'll find the def for 24d (last 8 words) in the 3 letter head word in Chambers and it justifies 'b?g'.
Also, 27 is in Chambers - but it's not 'core' (you need another fruit 'centre').
