Hi Simon,

I initially made the same mistake with with 17a - caused me no end of problems.

Another commendation for a brilliant piece of construction. And a shout for the current EV; also very cleverly done.

Pure genius. Brilliantly put together. Just finished, as was away, without my Chambers, and had very poor WiFi for Word Wizard or Forum help! Managed most unaided but think 11d was a bit tough.

Oh my! Only just finished this one, as was busy earlier. Finished the grid without needing hints: some tough clues but all eventually fell. Did not see the endgame coming even after I realised (quite early on) which two letters can resolve each wrong letter. Got to the end, and was stuck — eventually just wrote down all the ECE: wowee! Then wrote down the OCOL: woweeee! A veritable tour-de-force. With crosswords like this I always find myself wondering how far in advance the setter “books” which number their offering will be published as — then it occurred to me that this puzzle could have been published, with a different but always unambiguous solution, any time in the last ten years or any time in the next seventy or so! Brilliant.

Congratulations to Twin for winning the Puzzle of the Year for this incredible crossword, at the Listener Annual Awards 2020. It’s not always easy to remember the themes of Listeners past, but Twin’s always stand out (Dr Who, Connect 4 and this brilliant puzzle with 4630 in binary in row 3). A very well deserved win.

Thanks Merenz and, I agree, it was well deserved.

I've just gone back through the posts to see what I said at the time (@34) and my opinion hasn't changed:-)
