Superb construction and the penny did not drop until very late, although I was aware of some ambiguities. I don't understand the wordplay for 35.

On a different issue, (a) why does this thread go into reverse order as soon as I log in to post a comment and (b) why do I have to insert my post as a response to the last person in the list when my comment does not refer to what they have just posted?

In this case it is not merely a single cell that contains an unchecked symbol. It’s a large number of consecutive unches!

In reply to Foinaven, I find it very helpful to have the most recent messages at the top of the list, as I am often replying to them. We don’t have to click on the last message to reply to, but if we are replying to one particular message it is helpful to have that message in front of us as we type our reply.

Foinaven, (a) I think you can change that by clicking on your name and going into Forum Settings and (b) no idea.

35 - Yuri in Japanese means the answer. It is verifiable online.

I can't see there's a greater problem with checking than usual, so long as you are careful when entering the final characters.

Thanks, Loge. Yes, I get the Japanese version of Yuri, which I managed to find on the internet. What I don't see is the wordplay. Presumably the two letters deleted mean 'strangeness' - which is a property of elementary particles?

Only one letter deleted (S = strangeness, it's in Chambers) from a 5-letter word meaning artfully...

Have now finished (bar for working out the last couple of parsings), and as expected this was superb i thought. Excellent piece of grid and clue construction.

Brilliant puzzle. Best of the year so far in my book.

Could someone please help me with the wordplay for 37A? The answer seems obvious. Thanks in advance.

Answered already in the other thread @riversk...abbr. for Sabbath and short word for "holy" are what is excluded.
