Hello! This is my first post in the forum. Normally I get on OK with Paul but am struggling today. FOI was 9d and the SE corner is going well but other than that I seem bereft of ideas. I’m going to make some chocolate brownies and come back later.

Finished, after a fashion, but I can't parse what I've got for 15d and 24a.

Hi David,
15d is a five letter synonym for ship inside a word for armed forces missing ‘1’ and a common crossword term for a sailor.
24a is a homophone of ‘you’ plus the answer (a bird) which sounds like a country when spoken

Hi Barbs, welcome! You’re chocolate brownies sound yummie. My FOI was also 9d also and I had to take a break too! I found the shorter 5 letter clues were good ways to break in

Struggling to get going - is 11ac a fruit? 7 d an old name for a county?

My oh my, this one I am finding practically impenetrable. Close to an hour of head-scratching thus far, and making very little headway. I was brought up in 7d while it was still called that, so very much in my knowledge base!! And I found 11a quite clever and amusing. I have managed a smattering of other answers on the right side of the grid, building on from these, but wow I think this crossword is too hard!!!!
