Nice today. Got all of them. And most of the ones I couldn't parse were explained in this forum. And the penny just dropped for 21a, which was the last one I was stuck on. Nice!

Will also try the \guardian link.

Yes Jono I like the user interface on the app, which makes it clear and simple on the screen (using on iPhone) as well as access to the back catalogue where you can track which ones you have not done yet. Great for when waiting at the doctor’s etc!

Rather smugly I thought I had finished but I enjoy this forum so much I return to it later in the day sometimes... so...my 25a second word was incorrect even though it fitted well, thanks Brendan. My only frustration is my latest (unrequested) phone upgrade somehow means I have to manually (heavens) turn on and off predictive text between crossword and other apps, etc. Other than that, a good xword and a nice forum. Stay safe, wash hands, don't party too much, think local.

It took me an age to get 9A because it's a trade name and therefore not in the dictionary. Is it allowed to use trade names?

they have become generic, like biro and hoover. i'm more concerned about "first of picnic" (or whatever it was) being pee rather than p.

Hi Otherstuff, hi Chris,

I think you've got it exactly Chris, there's a list on Google that gives brand names that have become synonymous with their product. Some of them really surprised me:-

Band-Aid
Astroturf
Bubble Wrap
Cashpoint!!! (owned by Lloyds)

....to name but a few.

Also both the examples you have given were people who gave their name to their products Mr McRae did not. They are in my dictionary and it is possible that speedos are in a later version of that
