"Two cats playing" would leave you a couple of problematical Ss.

I did this puzzle and didn't have any problems with this clue, but I agree that it's a bit iffy.

Personally I can't accept 'cats', but I'd be happy with 'two cats' to indicate CATCAT. When you look at the solution, it would appear that in true Top of the Pops fashion one CAT isn't 'playing' at all, but I suppose you could argue that the apparently untroubled CAT was in fact made up of bits of both CATs...
