Well I solved the clue and I pondered on the many indications for anagram. We had 'running' recently in one of the regular comps here which I'd never seen before. So...

Hi Jono,

It would be good for members to have a thread where they can share a recent clue which they have been impressed with. Also I think it was Rosalind who said she (?) kept a log of `new` ideas or devices as she came across them - this might be just the place to share such ideas.

Some of the most memorable clues have not been Ximenean eg ggse (9,4) If a clue does not satisfy the rules, what makes it acceptable? I suppose ggse is actually a dingbat as was hijklmno (5), so, are dingbats ok?

I'm up for discussing clues, good and bad. I always try to keep to Ximenean principles and love smooth surfaces.

Yes, scrambled eggs is a bad one with no definition.
Jono's raconteur is good. I, too, liked the anagrind.

Re Clue chain.
I think it was bobsmum who started clue chain. I hope she's okay.
I took part for a while but found I was tied to my computer.

If something cropped up other participants were kept waiting and I was nervous of disappearing to the loo!!

I’m sure Ximenen principles will continue and that experimenters will continue to test the boundaries of what is acceptable. As long as it’s fair and points to single answer then why not?
I’m reminded of this from Paul in the Guardian...

At the time I thought that Paul clue was a step too far but it's all there. Anagrind, definition, surface and not a word wasted. Would never get it without crossers though.

It took me a while and it's hard to explain!
Kinky = anagrind
S = abbreviation for south (full)
and M = definition
