Got it, thanks Nelson, thanks Drxx - I'll have to invest in a new abacus:-)

NNI, re the 84 cells. I calculate that if there are 9 cells in the smallest arc and each increments by 1 up to 15, that gives 84. That helped me get the right arcs. They do look a bit blocky. It helped that it is symmetrical on the diagonal.

If it's of any use I recently bought a wireless Canon printer/scanner/copier from Aldi for £25. It's been excellent. I also buy a hard copy of the "I" and scan the puzzle.

Like many a recent puzzle, the difficulty of the end-game was disproportionate to that of the puzzle - I'm thinking particularly of Harribobs.

Anyway, thanks to Shirley for a pleasant afternoon's fun.

Thanks, folks. I'm delighted that it pleased and didn't cause too much stress with regard to the sixth highlighting colour for instance. Cockie (comment 13) there was a long editorial discussion about this (between a setter who is oY and an editor who is 'adopted' oY).The R in question, as well as being oG, was the very last of the Y kings and also held the oY title. We felt that the Bosworth title was a much better hint to solvers who mosty think it is that RoY that the mnemonic refers to than, say, 'In Wakefield Field'. (But you are the only person, so far, to have noticed the slight anomaly.)

Thank you. I've obviously got my curves wrong. I'll have to try again. It should be easy enough now once I get the 9 in place.

The change I'd made yesterday had corrected the shaded cells with 9 along the diagonal nearest to the NW corner. It would have been clearer to me if I had used coloured pencils rather than a single leaded pencil. Actually I don't have a box of coloured pencils and I can't get them from the grandkids just now.

Hi NNI, I have to admit I didn't actually use colours for shading. I drew a line for the first arc, then grey shaded the next, then another arc for the third, grey shading for the fourth etc. Once I realised the 9+1+1+1....= 84 I didn't bother too much about the aesthetics (:o)
