Got there in the end, rather fortunately picked the right option first go for the first letter of the unclued location. Enjoyed phase 1 but found phase 2 quite tedious. Clever, but a grind. Still, at the moment, time filling is welcome - it's too hot to garden or anything else really.

A bit of a curate's egg. Clue difficulty fine for phase 1. Phase 2 fine (just praying I didn't miscount!). Probably lucked in with first destination (had to start somewhere) so knowing location of 1st and 4th letters - guessed where the third would be which gave me the letter and so 4 possible alternatives for letters 1&2. Chose the most viable. With first 3 in place again left me with 6 alternatives for 4th of which 2 were viable. Spotted the location I knew. Although completed fairly quickly spent some time on 2nd location (new to me)...must travel more...

On working through phase 2 I’ve hit a wall. I think I have 18a from phase 1 wrong. Could some kind soul let me have the 3 unchecked letters?

My mistake, I misread and thought you wanted phase 2 - Quising is right, it's G and S.

Sorry Brendan, I misunderstood the question. They are G and S in phase one, and O and I in the final solution. My apologies

Stage 1 complete: stage 2 works until I try to enter the last answer (32 across) where its fourth letter (T) clashes with the second letter of the first entry (U). anyone else had the same problem?
