Jogamel, 1d - H(O)ARD. I had DEP(O)T at first but I'm sure that's wrong.

I'm far from finished. Some clues are making little sense at the moment.

The 'w' is extra - so 'o' inside 4 letters for 'firm' = def 'store'

ok - answers it is - 'rand'

It’s a slog for me as I’m finding lots of clues very difficult being unsure of what is the definition to many.

jogamel - I think ifor goes for some very wordy definitions to confuse us ('act that's generous to old folk', being a good example).

drxx. Being one of the ‘old folk’ I don’t know what that is at all.....

So am I, and me neither -
anag MEDALS + E(arne)D on the end

...but I do now (it's hyphenated).

Where does 1a start? Col. 1,2 or 3?

I've solved all the clues and filled the grid but I can't see an answer. That's partly because I can't determine the extra letters in some of the down clues, ones beginning:
