Got 24a. I spelled bigwig differently from the solution. So... 9a ??? Hints

Four letter synonym for acerbic, three letter greek letter starting with e, and then three letter standard synonym for can. Answer is a fruit pie.

I went for a different answer for 14a - a part of speech. Equally valid and equally weak!

Yes, I thought about that part of speech too. The question is whether it is for a proper name or not. Yes. It could be valid too, but the word major does not fit well as a noun, I think.

Sergeant and Major are both ranks as well as names, mathi. Both are given as nouns in Chambers.

The Sergeant and Major start with capital letters too.

Agree. It is a vague clue with many answers.

I get a frisson of excitement at starting a crossword, even a Quiptic, but that has gone for me for the Everyman. There is no consistency even within a single puzzle, just an odd mix of write ins, poorly concealed hidden answers and anagrams, and a few WTFs? Might look for another Sunday breakfast diversion.

Mathi and phil10000 thanks for the 9a hints. Got it now. On bigmacsub views. I do not like these primarily type of clue eg 8a basically it says here are the letters you need in the right order...... fill them in. Not great. Rest of this weeks was ok.
