Cancel 11d - it's the very first definition in Chambers!!

That just leaves the parsing for 6d.

Thanks Kirky, I'd considered that but then both "coxcomb" and "past" seem redundant.

Can anyone parse 17a and confirm if the extra word - I did think it's "starter" but now I'm wondering if it's "well".

Also, is "djellabahs" the extra word in 16a.

Ok, it's "starter" but I'm still unsure of the parsing.

Yes, brendan - extra 'djellabahs'.

17 'Late' is the def - 'up front' , just means, 'at the front - 'Well' = SO + 'MET' + IM + E(ncourage)

Thanks Drxx. I've started tracing the names and have, so far, got John and Susan but then it seems to lead to either Tim but also Tom - this is going to take some working out and I haven't even started looking for the lake yet!

Don't forget, 'the name of an author appears' (and be careful regarding the lake).
