Williamseal, yes - there's a clash. The answer is just an anagram, the definition is 'base of operation'.

I don't seem to be finding this as straightforward as everyone else. To get going again can I just confirm if in 35d the "ships" is the Royal Navy and that "seacoast" is the extra word. Also can I have a big hint as to what's going on in 1d and the parsing for 38a I have a word beginning with O that means "yellowish- brown", but I can't parse a single letter of it.(Malone, give as much away as you want:-))

Brendan, yes for your 35 D stuff. The definition is 'indeed'.

1 D. Laundering, unlike gardening, is done indoors.

38A Begins B, it's an uninspiring colour, almost the name of what I consider an uninspiring 'roll' (alternative spelling).

Thanks Malone. I'm still not seeing 38a - is it one of the words with clashes, only I've got BEH?? I can see a word that rhymes with 'sage' but don't get the 'roll' part?

It's okay, I'd never seen that spelling before.

Can I have hints for 33a and 28d and 29d crossings.

38 The word rhymes with 'Sage', if it were a bit longer it'd be a roll with a hole.

My scribbles are too messy for the clashes stuff!

33 A. A general term for 'a highly emotional film.

28 D. The Rake is a person. A common 'church' after the fairly common 'cancelled service', in sport.

29 . A new (to me) word for Avoid. The usual 'second' the usual 'finish in face', with a common three-letter 'average' inside.
