malone, have you ever read Bernard Levin's Essay on Quoting Shakespeare?

In St Agnat near Sorrento, there was Orlando's Bar, even with a real Orlando!! My name was worth a drink or two!

My poor sons had to see Coriolanus with me, one of the 4 times I went. More for Charles Dance, though, in this case.

Hi Ros,

Is it a coincidence that you're named after a Shakespearean heroine?

Ros, thanks. No, I hadn't heard of that - but have just had a quick look at it. It looks interesting, definitely worth a proper read later.

Glad your name's come in useful at times.

Hi Brendan, malone

Rosalind isn't my real name, I just wish it was. I always use it when in need of a pseudonym, but I didn't tell Orlando that! It was my grandmother's second name. The other grandmother was called Gertrude.... Oh dear, that is a thought.

..and I don't think either of my parents would have known Rosalind was a Shakespearian heroine.

Rosalind, I'd assumed that wasn't your real name - until you said it got you a free drink (or two).

We discussed Rosalind's handle a year or so ago, with reference to Ian Pears's "Arcadia". One of the central characters is called Rosalind, and an English don tells her that she has the name of the greatest heroines in fiction.
Part of the plot is closely based on "As you like it".

I enjoyed reading the list of quotes assembled by Bernard Levin. I went to see Upstart Crow recently, and there's a scene where Shakespeare co-opts and takes credit for a whole host of pithy one liners - much to the annoyance of Kate and Bottom:-)
