Thanks both of you. Got there now. Bradford’s lists the one I had. Unbelievable that there should be two words for boats on the Ganges!

I’m finding this crossword nigh on impossible but I’ll keep going. Drxx... you mentioned in an earlier post that 2 letters move to the outside cells. Does the same apply to 1 letter moves?

I think I need to be brave and start pencilling in some possibilities. I’ve solved a fair number but my grid looks bare.

Just about there. Can see what ring 5 is about. To help me over the last hurdle, can anyone help with 23’ 27, 35 or 3?

23 is tricky - the word for 'sang partly in falsetto' is a word you'll know (starting with Y) and you remove the 2x 'd', however you need the alternative spelling of the 'y' word.

...doesn't my answer at 47 help with the wordplay for 27?

...'chaps from Bangkok' would be ??? ??? (first word the alt spelling without the usual 'h').
Last one - another word for hades + 2 letter god.

Drxx, thanks for your very helpful hints, which along with others have helped me to stay in touch with this monster of a puzzle! In your post 14 you say that once the message appears it’s straightforward. I now have enough of ring 5 to see how it works and to appreciate its cleverness, but I don’t think I’m going to find the rest straightforward! However, I’ll push on.
