Hi Merenz, sorry, was out watering the plants. Glad you got it sorted. Also waiting for a copy of Brewers to arrive so I could put 4599 to bed but looked on the Listener web site and now know what I needed to! Oh well, another reference book will be nice to have.

Just coming back to something I asked about much earlier in this thread (but didn't want to discuss in too much detail as it was so early), I can't find the word I've entered in any dictionaries yet. The word ends in U. Can anyone help please?

I thought that might be the problem - I did the same.

I got a bit fixated on the indian tribe - seeing 'tribe' as the social unit.
Muraria helped me out earlier with the U, which helped me finish.

All clear now.

I thought there would be some further posts on this as the week went on, but no.
I nearly always complete IQ and enjoy it, but this week I only have ten answers entered. Before I give up, can any of you lend a hand to get me going again?
Advice on 1a would be a good start.
Also if you can point out any that are at the easier end of the scale!
Or give me a few numbers where the two letters need to be removed, as only have four pairs so far.

Hi Lumen, all but 2 of the upper across clues have 2 letters removed in 1a. It's the main medium of fine art and starts with a reversed Muse.. 14a is based on the usual term for a rowing crew. 9a is a Bronx type term...the clue has a spare letter in eyes.I found 13a one of the easier clues. With those in 1d becomes reasonably obvious.
In the lower half focus on 22a, 24a and 33a then 20d should be clear. From 1d and 20d much more becomes clear.

I have 1a and 9a right away from your tips. Had 14 already.
13a I am guessing extra letter in lax?
So, very strange letters in 1d! Not much fits there.
I’ll persevere.
