Orson, thanks - I think! Although I'm a Scottish woman, I lived in England for a long time - I got to know many, many people over the years and never met anyone (man, woman or child) who said they liked the poet/author.

You'll be pleased to hear that I have no problems accepting the poet as an important part of our cultural heritage, but that doesn't make him any more palatable for me.

Here's a clue from today's Daily Telegraph which might appeal to readers of this thread:

D'Arcy's character (10)

Struggling to finish, can I have more help on 17d. Rescue missions one.
I have C?S??A?S, I'm guessing one of those is a clash. Malone said grottoes is the usual 5 letter word but that didn't get me anywhere.
Also 18d, Treatment for depression, exercises second method (8) I think a clash is throwing me here too.

caves = grottoes ...reverse ....

18d is a drug ...usual 2 letters for exercise + 2 letter synonym for second /short time + 4 letter synonym for method or row. 3rd letter is a clash

Thanks for those.
Never heard of 17d...it's not included in Chambers Word Wizard, but as some else said, it appears online, in caps, although its obviously not an acronym!

Lumen, glad you got those. 17 D, without capitals, is in Chambers and the Oxford Dictionary of English.

Nearly there now, can't see the clash in last column. Presume it must be in 33d, I have ??SS. Plans to ditch earliest customs (4) I think maybe its USES but can't work out the clashes.

Lumen, your Uses is correct, your first S isn't! I think 37 A might not have shown up in Chambers, but the plural I've got was confirmed somewhere (can't remember where!)
