Jadzia, I was stuck with 39 for ages - and yet it was straightforward. Just one of the usual crossword 'about' + Masters+a common four-letter examination. The definition is 'having no qualms'.

hi jadzia49 - that was my last bit too. A 4-letter Hebridean Isle (2 of them) in Bing, as you suggest. I have an ambiguity, but stare at I as I might I can find no indication of the "thematic nature". Diagonals don't seem to help. A nudge, or perhaps a bloody great shove, would be useful. Off to Singapore now for the F1.

Cockie, I lined up all the 'omitted from Down answers'. I then stared at the Across entries to see what I could do with them. 13 A, 26 A and 44 A showed me the way forward - the new entries all had something in common...

27 Horny, sex-mad American (ie US slang) Hoy, island, with RN, nurse, inside.

37 D Tatou, an armadillo (so 'digger'?) Ta, volunteers, To, for +U, united.

29 A Eyres, old law courts, sounds like Airs, pretensions.
