Nikki, your letters for 6d and 12a are correct.
Can't say too much about the connections, but suggest you look carefully at 8-letter solutions.

Nikki, have you not noticed anything significant about quite a few of the 8-letter answers? Writing those out might shed some light.

12 A. 'Wear down' is the definition for what I think is an old word. It's an anagram (disagreeable) of 'trait' with an extra letter, as per the preamble.

Thank you both. Got to go out now, but will try to complete later - will let you know when I get there! I never spent 2 days, on and off, on a crossword!

I've been away for a couple of days, having left this Genius behind. Having read through the thread on this I'm still confused! I have a group of 6 that are obviously related and I understand some of the clues with letters that have to be taken away/added. Despite filling most of the grid I'm unsure as to whether I have things in the right place. For example, for 22a I have f?g?r?. Is this right in which case I don't see an African writer! For 19d I have ?r?n??. Should I give up now????!!

Tintin, your letters for 22 A are correct - I remember the writer (best known for political plays).

Thank you Malone - that one's sorted and convinces me that my bottom left-hand corner is correct. That just leaves 19 and 27.
