I have the first six - and some of the second six - but am stuck on 1, 19, 20 and 27 ... ah, well - tomorrow is another day.

Ah, as I thought, 1d is the counterpart of 1a. And I'm pretty sure now of 19. I think 27 may be the counterpart of 7, but can't parse it - or find anything for 20 ...

I have 20 as one with an extra letter in the wordplay. Something worn by Indian women.

jadzia - I'm pretty sure 19 ends in I - it's not a French protectorate. That would give ?E?I?I?G, which would be a companion for 7 ... but I can't see 20 at all.

Can you parse 27 for me? 20 is the spot on an Indian lady ‘s forehead but an unusual spelling for it. The fifth letter is an h.

Well I now think 20 is the companion for 6, and it's a word for taking on (staff) minus a letter for ringleader and a letter for union. Let me know if this makes sense ...

Thanks - and thanks for 20 - I presume the search engine is the first 3 letters - am hopeless with computer technology - and not sure where "several" fits in (if the last letter is an add-on).
