It is so frustrating to fall at the final hurdle.
The grid is finished but I can't complete the six items for 40 cells. I have:-
14 ac - 9
34/35 ac - 6
8/21 dn - 9 or10
14 dn - 6
26 dn - 6
1 above 31 dn - 6

That makes 42 or 43 cells!

Where have I gone wrong?

I didn't take into account the 2 common crossing cells.

Thanks Malone. Didn't know that one was smelly. It is surely unusual to have to highlight answers that are already answers in their own right in the puzzle. I'm more used to picking out cells from several answers.

Clarifying my comment - this was about how to find the plant at 14ac in Chambers. The definition of 'laserwort' found at 8dn points you to 'herb frankincense' and that entry mentions 'olibanum' which supplies the generic name. It also mentions 'spruce resin' (which doesn't have an entry) giving the plant at 31dn.

In 1a wordplay, how do we get steamer=SR, which it clearly must be but I don’t see that attested in CED.

mooncow - towel has been trimmed at both ends, leaving steamer as str. Hope this helps!
