Hi all, I think I have got everything sorted with filled grid, joined cells,
correct colour, the two symmetrical words, hidden words and the two letter adjustment. I'm happy with my order of joining cells but i'm stumped for justifying the order suggested by "Leader of Whitechapel gallery fully into data processing". I'm assuming it's a clue without a definition and I have the first letter of a word, a famous gallery, "up" from an earlier comment and a two letter abbreviation for the last two words but can't make head nor tail of the result. Am I completely in the wrong track?

Lilith, trace a wavy line through the centres of cells containing the unclued letters as far as the last letter of the gallery. I think then it helps to think of the last bit as following the line through 'data-processing, detouring around up'. That's what I did, anyway, and it looks roughly right. Hope it is.

Finished the crossword, but can’t see how the extra letters in the clues are arrived at, occasionally, to arrive at the instruction. Any help with 9d (left) would be appreciated. I just thought that some of the derivation s of the extra letters in the clues was shaky.

I can’t parse 9d (left) either casanova (glad it wasn’t just me!). Hopefully someone can help us out. I’m not entirely happy with the definition nor the wordplay in 9d (right) either if I’m honest either. But since they both contribute significantly to the theme, I’ve accepted them.

I made a bit of a pig’s ear of the middle section of the additional letters to start with. But backtracked and fixed them once I’d worked out the theme. I feel happy enough that I’ve justified them (except 9d). There was some very tough clueing and my BRB has had a good workout.

On reflection the extra letters in the clues were sound in their derivation, except for 23a (right) which was given as an I but I thought it should be an s

For 9d left I have i.e. about a word for a very small amount (the least) leading to a word that can mean reliable. i is then the extra letter.

Casanova. I was happy with the extra I in 23a.... (I)S AS, for ‘is like’

Thanks smellyharry. I racked my brains for something to mean ‘in other words’... i.e! I’m kicking myself now. And the word for ‘least amount’ is a new one on me. I’ll try to remember it but will doubtless forget. I’d been anagramming ‘the’, taking e as the least of ‘the’. It’s so frustrating when you become fixed on the wrong approach
