I also had that interpretation but I'm afraid to my mind it's a poor definition. A lie-in to me involves sleeping, not crossword solving.

I didn't think it unfair?
When seeing "mush", it didn't take me to come up with "schmaltz"
And it is given in Bradford's under "mush"....I have just checked.

I don't doubt that there is a definition somewhere but how many dictionaries do we need to consult before finding it? It should be possible to solve a clue from the fodder, not by working backwards.

Which def. are you unhappy with ? I did not consult any dictionaries until you asked for clarification. I consider all the clues were fair and solvable from the fodder provided.
