Thanks, phil10000. I had 17d - just didn't click with 'mush'. As for 27a, never mind barking up the wrong tree, I wasn't even in the right forest (Unsurprisingly, there is no anagram of 'novel' and 'ord' - 'cOnRaD' frequently - that means 'Victorian'). Ho hum.

Hi Chris, yes, Chambers gives 'Frequently' as No.3 in the list of abbreviations for "fr".

It is also technically and indirect or "ghost" anagram, as "fr" has to be created to make the fodder - tut-tut!

Again, the setter certainly likes Chambers! No mention of the fr. abbreviation in COD.

slang word for policeman (4) + 3 for a basic spelling test
