Well - I’m flummoxed by the preamble this week. I have solved a large number of (normal) clues but can’t make moss nor sand of how to proceed having found I thnk only one of the multiple definition clues. Am I to take it that the absence of queries here means everyone has been more successful???

Hi jogamel,

Well I've filled in the grid (bar one entry) and found the motto - but still a very long way to go I think.

I've managed to get to the endgame with the motto, group, five muti-definition entries and highlighting but not sure about the "real name" of the person linked to the group?

Muraria, I wouldn't mind a nudge with 23d - then I'm going to call it a night.

Hi Nelson,
Answer is hidden in the clue (read backwards)

Muraria, ditto. Although I haven't got the double letter cell either. Let us know if you have any inspiration!

Good morning everyone. Strange, Nelson, how brains work (or not) differently. 23d was about the first clue I solved! I’m back on this a bit today, but as my top left corner is bare, please would someone give me a big push with 1a?
It stabilises everything when used for green sandwich filling (7)

I'm pretty sure the double-letter is in the jocular version of the motto.. TH for S.

1a is B+ALL AS +T.. where 'all as' takes the place of L (green) in the BLT sandwich
