I have only got one abbreviation - a place name in 21a.
still haven't got the central square though.

kobnut - yes, that one is in the initial grid. My other abbreviation is a short down answer that's altered by the endgame . What do you have for that?

It's the obvious symbol for the centre square.

Hi All. Started thinking this was going to be impossible but then managed to complete initial grid quite quickly. However now completely at a loss. Have the 6 words and therefore the 2 letters for those. I think I have the 2 clues with the superfluous lettes though can only find 4 in one of them and cannot begin to see a location from them. If I have the right clues then the year is quite a long time ago but that doesn’t help either. Any assistance appreciated.

the 2 clues with the 5 superfluous letters are quite close to each other numerically and are both in DOWN clues

Each set of 5 makes a word when the 5 letters are shuffled ...then put the 2 words together (though you need to reverse the order)

i have the 4 word remark but don't know how to change the letters ...
