Interesting, Turast! The preamble specifically says 'letter' , so would the symbol work for that?

Yes, it says letter. It would have been better IMHO, if the preamble had specified a symbol in the central cell, and another symbol in 16 other cells. The depiction would then have been improved. As it is, if I do submit an entry, it will have a central cell containing a letter in orange + 16 cells containing the same (thematic) letter in blue. What can I say, I'm whimsical.

Thanks, Turast - you might have the best-looking entry! I really liked your symbol idea and was a little disappointed when I read the preamble again and saw 'letter'.

Whatever the correct letter is, I do think it is ambiguous. The majority opinion here seems to be that it should be "S" for sun, but the letter "O" could also represent the sun as the central globe in a "depiction of the consequences".

The solving blog for this has gone on fifteensquared. As many thought, the centre letter was S. The setter has commented there.
