Thanks kirky.
Your hint was straight forward so I got the aids. I had to change 34a, 30d, 36a to fit it.

The grid is looking better but still left side has major gaps.

Any hint on 18d, 16a, 41a would move it forward.
23a. Just based on letters available is a synonym of up to date with L as the first letter. Right?

Since only solvers of this puzzle are answering, I have not typed the clues.

23. Yes.

18 D. The first two words form the definition. It is a very English expression.

16 A,. A four-letter word for 'walk' + 'what's left of oak' (common crossword use of 'left'). The last four words form the definition.

Thanks malone.
I had to look up 18d.

41a. Another word for tale? Not sure how it parses.

Two remain. 17a and 22a.

Sorry, I missed 41 earlier - I think I was too busy recoiling from the management-speak. 'Move it forward' - it's just one of my pet hates! Just take two letters off a seven letter word meaning 'eventful life', the clue shows which two letters.

17 A three-letter word meaning Jack, then a Nice/French article, usual in crosswords. (about = reverse). for a chemist and engineer.

There's a misprint in 22a - in the first word. I'm sure you'll have enough letters to finish that - and the puzzle - off.

Thanks malone.
That was a dynamite hint for 17a.
Grid is complete.
But will worry about the centre cell tomorrow.

Clever movement of letters giving proper words! I assume the middle letter is "O"?

I thought "S" but that may be too obvious?
