I thought "O" to depict what the sun looks like in the sky, but it could just as well be "S".

I put S, because in the puzzle's title EARTH goes round the S.

Is anyone still looking in? I have solved everything but am feeling dim because I don't understand the clue to 7d. I assume it must be ARIES becoming ARISE. But why?

It's ARI(a)S for 'melodies' with the second 'note' (a) changing to E.

Yes ionacarr, 'airs' was my first thought - it took quite a while to shift it.

I think the central cell should contain a circle with a dot in it. This is the solar system symbol for the sun. The preamble uses the word "depicts". The editors certainly shouldn't reject it.
