Hi all and a happy new year! Yet again I have been stumped by a pesky unch which is probably very obvious but at present eludes me. I have la?ish for 5D and assume that the unknown should be a V but cannot see either the definition or the wordplay. Could someone please put me out of my misery... Thanks

Slavish without the first letter of shocking; waste is one of the definitions under the verb lavish.

Thank you once again! I had assumed that was the definition part but was lacking the confirmation you just provided. Another enjoyable puzzle on the whole I felt.
