Your hint made 42a a piece of cake.

I do not have 4th letter of 24a but that is wher A3 goes, I think.

17d. I have ?URS?S. Are my letters correct? What is the def?

I have replaced the grid with all A and B..
I am not sure what I am looking for.

Your first S should be an e Sunday.

When grid is filled look in middle row and then the theme starts to become clear.

Yes to character beginning with N.

This character becomes
One with A when you change to the group A answers.

There is a lesser known myth associated with A. Both A and N were transformed into a substance. If you put that word where A and N are inthe grid it leaves all real words.

sunray - 24a is an old spelling of a very common coin. It is replaced by A3 in the second version of the grid.

17d - your s appears in the second version of the grid. The definition is thick soups. Derived from reversing a (hyphenated?) word meaning one who establishes something.
