My 6d is wrong as I now have A. T. L instead of E, T. L in the unchecked.

I cannot find a word that would fit if my first letter C is correct.
Any suggestion?

Sunray, that is one of the versions I had yesterday - and why I made a mistake here earlier today! - but using the E (along with the other two) definitely results in a word. The C is fine.

Morning all. Only got round to this last night and while have all the original answers and a head start on the endgame, I cannot find an appropriate anagram of 1 across. Would someone kindly put me out of my misery please?

Hi bubbur, it's hyphenated which is probably why you haven't been able to find it yet. The second part is COST.

Hi bubber - I don't normally post much but in the case of this abysmal puzzle I think full disclosure, not just hints, is called for. So, for 1a you have either CONSTRUCTER or CURRENT-COST. Previous posters have said only that it begins with a C, as though that will be helpful.

The trouble with Poat is always that he thinks he's so clever. If you're a Listener devotee you'll remember him for the 'hare' puzzle in which the endgame took place within the preamble, outside the grid. See what I mean? There's just too much work involved in this one to make it worth continuing. You'll apparently end up with a completely different grid apart from the unches in down clues, which even at first solving are often impossible to fill.

Add to that the fact that 6dn is pointless as you get all the letters without having to dig around for an obscure anagram, and the unfair over-unching of 6dn and 17dn. Over-unching of downs crossing 1a is at its most absurd in 7dn, effectively a 3-letter word with two unches!

Dr Who fans seem to like it though. Some of them have solved it.

My copy was taken away in the recycling bin this morning but I think 1a was RECONSTRUCT.

I wish there was a way of editing or taking back posts. When saoralba said one or the other for 1a, I read it as meaning the first and second grid. CORN-CUTTERS was another possibility though.

Thanks a lot. Current-cost is a new one to me. Couldn't agree more. Puzzles ike this are a test of patience and fortitude rather than intelligence. Tiresome. Only stubbornness on my part is making me complete it.
