Hi Woodlouse, when you post a comment at 8:33 on Saturday asking for help, I'm reminded of the history of explorations and warfare. If you make an early start and outstrip your support group, then you must accept the consequences of your own ambition. I'm glad that DJA was available to help you, though not sure how happy he is to be referred to as 'et al'. For future information, I've only once begun the puzzle on Friday, when I had weekend commitments but Friday evening open : a colleague from this forum sent me the puzzle online, and I was able to complete it before I went away. Usually I don't begin the puzzle until Saturday afternoon, sometimes considerably later.

Bradford gives a four letter synonym for betel. The answer is a seven letter word relating to a plant.

A splendid puzzle, taking me all the (long) way back to school. Well, almost. The theme is 3,5, but I can't locate the eighth letter clash. no doubt I shall do so within a few minutes of posting, but just in case I'll post anyway. (I've found the interloper.)

Look at 26ac/13dn.

I’d gone down a blind alley on 26dn and have just now worked it out. Thanks to planks and others for earlier hints, particularly for 24ac.

Finished except can't get 28dn.
