As a start one of the cities- the gap one- is in bottom left corner on bottom row.

43a, 24d and 30d are shorter than the space in the grid.

I have about 3/4 of the grid filled. So far I have two clashes in the NW corner. I suspect there are more in the SE corner. Can anyone tell me if any sort of pattern will emerge? At this point I have no idea what the theme is.

The theme is the name of a work that is literally what is removed from some of the clues when they are anagrammed.

This is hard! I've completed the SW corner, complete with gaps, but I don't understand the wordplay for 23d.

Any tips for elsewhere eg 1ac or 1d? Thanks

1dn has an extra word - low. I've just discovered the theme - well outside my sphere of experience. I think this may well be my first non-finish of the year, apart from the numbers ones which I don't even attempt.
