I know this will qualify me as dunce of the year (again!) but I still don't understand the winning clue. Please will someone enlighten me?

Hi rosalind
RE and ME follow DO, put US backwards inside
Not to my taste, and I don't think I've seen MI spelled ME - it comes from this Latin hymn
Ut queant laxīs resonāre fībrīs
Mīra gestōrum famulī tuōrum,
Solve pollūtī labiī reātum,
Sancte Iōhannēs.
so should be MI always
(Ut became DO later)

Hi chrise, whether it's to your liking or not, all are in Chambers which is the reference dictionary for most "quality' crosswords and aristo as an accomplished musician gave it his blessing.

Oxford online has me for the note, with (US) mi. I've always used the latter.

Was wondering how to interpret that. Welcome back at any rate. Haven't seen you around.
