I should be saddened if anyone were to be deterred from entering either of the weekly competitions because they thought they weren't good enough. To me, they're just a bit of fun and should be open to people of all ability levels. It's not as if there's a huge cash prize at stake.
I used go to a weekly music club at our local pub. This was open to everyone from beginners to experts. Inevitably there was a preponderance of guitarists with the occasional mandolin, banjo, fiddle or harmonica some evenings. (I took a portable keyboard). With a wide variety of musical tastes among the participants we would all at some point be playing in styles we might be unfamiliar with, and learning from each other. Traditional, folk, country, blues, rock, pop - we did it all. I used to sneak in the odd obscure song by Genesis or Supertramp and the like. The point is, it was fun. Of course, eventually a couple of people began to take it all a bit too seriously. One used to blow his top at people playing out of time of off key. Another who thought we should be entertaining the other patrons rather than teaching each other etc. regularly threw his toys out of the pram. A number of people stopped attending for fear of ridicule. I wouldn't let myself be bullied, but eventually left because it just wasn't fun any more.
I hope this doesn't go the same way.
