Can't parse 27a or 22a although they seem to fit ..??

Xwordfan - 22a is a cut of meat, consumption was the old name of a lung disease, o for of and halve of wine. Word for profitable is fat.

27ac is FAT + E.

I have filled grid, removed summer flowers, noticing that all entries are still words! Now, what to do with mad toms traps. I have no idea where to be looking

You need to replace mad toms traps scattered around the grid with the equipment the hunter would use. Have you got the nature of his hobby? His equipment is (9,3) with the first letters of the two words B and N. I found Bradford’s Crossword Solver gives useful lists of Ms and Bs.

24a and 43a are proving awkward to say the least! What's going on here?

24ac: definition is an archaic word meaning “separate and remove”. One- letter abbreviation for “English” and a four-letter cut of beef (often “knighted”).

43ac: definition is “images”. Three-letter word for “recognise” (in the sense of “understand” or “realise”), followed by two-letter Plural of Latin word for “god”, all reversed.

43a recognise = see gods = di put together and reverse for images
