Many thanks for all your replies. Of course I made a mistake in my last message. I meant I have two s in 14d right and 26ac left. Ive just seen the light for 14d right. I've now finished the left hand grid. I have 2 letters left- G and W. I can't work out where to put an extra letter in 1d without using another s. I have still to get 12ac right and cannot parse 24 ac right. Help with these would put it all to bed for me.

Sorry to have troubled you all. I've now got 1d left, but it is two words (5, 2).
And I've solved 12ac. I think I'll give up on parsing 24ac, but I have no extra letter for either of the 24s, so I don't know what has happened there.

I think that 1d should be 5 2 rather than 7
Then the last remaining letter for 12 a
For 24a ’ - definition is empties

Thank you Roof and others. 2 Down, right 'split' - of course. I was reading that as an instruction, not the definition. Have also got 22 ac now, with an added J.
For 10 ac left I have a shortened form of a word for facts (think, lies, damned lies and ...) But what to add to it? O, r, e or u all make words, except I've used my e in 25 ac left. Getting 2d will help eliminate some possibilities.
Someone mentioned the extra s. I thought I'd got it in 14 D right but then I've also got it in 26 ac left.
Anyone got ideas about the electronics firm in 3D right? I have it ending with i.
I am having such trouble with 17D and 16 Dleft that I am wondering if 22 ac is right, but it is a fabric, starting with a word that might mean rail and followed by three articles, one definite and two indefinite.
Will I finish before the family gets back from watching Bristol City? I doubt it.

Ah yes, Roof, I think I've got 2D left. It ends with a cockney's house (a person's 'ouse is their ....' Before that is a word meaning agile and it starts with the extra letter giving an unusual word meaning happiness. That gives me a t for 10ac, so I'm going with the u as the extra letter.

I have u for 10a

Electronic firm is alternate letters in clue

S is not the extra letter for 14d

Your 22 sounds correct

17 down -definition is turn against

16 down - definition is inculcates

Both require an extra letter

I've just returned from a football match and see that many
of us are near-completion! I still cannot work out 1Down Part 2 (R/H side), however, and any further assistance here would be welcome. Can help with any other aspects, however.

Hi rpchambe

No j in 22ac. It is in 5d, both right grid
It's u in 10ac
2d the first letter is the extra letter and the last three are a cockney house, drop the h.
Change the s in 14d. Think Ireland
I'd never heard of the electronics firm, but if you try alternate letters fron East bahrein and add an extra letter at the start you'll get there
Suspect your 22ac is right, not a common fabric
17d, get the server, not person or computer and it will come. The answer to the clue is one 6 letter word, adding the extra letter makes it two words.
Is Bristol City still playing? It's raining hard in Exeter.

Ah, if not J in 22 ac right, then it could be F or P - no, I've used P . Thanks for the hint about Ireland. I'd got 17D left and had the alternate letters for 3 D right, but couldn't think what letter to add - now I see! I'd been wondering where that could go.
Still nil all 59 minutes in at Ashton Gate. I expect they are still so excited about beating Man U. It is pouring here too, I hope family are under cover.
