I hate puzzles where so much depends on getting a single clue. I am mystified by the Guardian' s 9, 6, 16. which is linked to a dozen other clues. I assume it is an anagram of 'We dominate, are pale-hued" Any hint would be helpful for a phrase of 4, 5, 8, 4

I've thrown this aside, 2/3 done, fed up with it. My least favourite compiler!

thanks, Joe60 - I wanted 2d hints if possible, but very helpful - can even parse them - but oh dear - pretty obtuse, and as other say - not very enjoyable. I may give this one a miss too.

Despite Chrise's hint I still haven't got the the main clue. Thanks for some of the answers but how do you parse 14ac?
I too may have to give up soon.
