I haven't heard back from Ash but I have received an email putting the opposite point of view, part of which is quoted below (with the sender's permission). It makes interesting reading

"I wish to say that one of the reasons for people opening a new thread is that they do not want to see all the answers already given, as that spoils the crossword for them. They should have the right to open a new thread if they wish.
They could , of course, add their question to the existing thread without peeking at all the other answers, but their question may have already been asked. Someone will then moan that the question has already been asked and that they should have checked this.

The other crossword forum (answerbank) has no problem whatever with multiple threads on the same crossword and no one is asked to stick to one thread. There is no pettiness there if someone asked a question that has already been asked by someone else, and they are all very light-hearted .

I agree with chiaroscuro’s post @ #14 that people are just getting their knickers in a twist ."

A very good point was made, Norah.

There's no need for anyone to open a new thread just to say thank you.
Unacknowledged help is annoying as well though!

Other than that I think things are fine as they are.

I can see the argument your correspondent has made, Norah, but why would one want to get help on a crossword while progress could still be made on it? I only ask when I have completely ground to a halt, so previous answers would either be to clues I had already solved, or would be helping me to solve ones I was stuck on.

I think, ChrisE, that sometimes people want some help to get started, especially those new to cryptics.

Interesting view Chrise, but someone may just want a kickstart, or a couple to help them on their way.

Yes, I completely agree with Chris on this one.
What he says makes perfect sense.

eirlys and rossim
Again I see what you mean, but also if someone wanted help to get started, any help would be appreciated?

Perhaps only the first couple of posts would need to be viewed.

I suppose the best reason for starting a new thread would be wanting to request a hint rather than an answer.
