I thought 19 across had to be changed to accommodate my 20 down. I couldn't see 20 down having 3 or more letters changed as it's only 6 letters long.... But if 17 down needs changed that theory is a bust!

Jack, I may well be wrong, in fact I'm not too happy with 20dn but 17 worked nicely. I'm still stuck on 16 and 21 - they must be changers I think but I can't see it.

hi all,
making no progress on solving 19. "ITV comic" means nothing in Oz.
got a few solutions that fit the clues but where they cross I don't know which ones to change : >(( .
a little pointer on 19 would be nice.

I'm completely stuck in the NE corner with 3 to go. I have a straight solution for 7a but there is also a plausible 19 22 version for it as well, which means it must cross another 19 22 solution in either 4d or 5d. Can't work out the singer or the outlaw, either.

garble - you're lucky only to be stuck in the NE ... I think 4d is a word for "dropping by" and needs to be 19 22d into a word for doing well. Haven't a clue about 5d - or 3,6,10, 14, 15 or 21. I am assuming 19 22 only uses letters within a small range of the original - but have consulted websites and different versions seem to work different ways so am still in the dark about what exactly the setter means.

A little progress from yesterday but is a place name an acceptable ("real") word as a result of a 19 22 operation? Also, can anyone please confirm that 14a is one of the 12? If it's not, I'll be looking for a paddle to get back down this creek.

4D The singer is commonly used in Xwords (one word) led a big 70's/80's band
5D Outlaw as a verb as opposed to an outlaw

14A is not one of the 12 to be changed before entry. None of the 12 become a place name on changing.
