Plodding along. 1,15,17 down and 23 across still to do. Given the crossing letters I have only two possible grid entries for 1 down, both beginning ab. But I can't reverse engineer either into a clue answer.
Prospero, try looking evenly at around ten.... Meantime, I have everything except 17 d for which I have ?r?e?t and I assume it is a changer as there's still one to nail.
Prospero...8D changes even (as opposed to odd) "around ten" gives you the first 4 letters of the unchanged answer...the first three of those are changed before entry.
Thanks Jack and Ixion - I had the right answer but just couldn't see the "even" - stupid as it's a classic cluing device - as is 17d, JA - the lock is to do with hair ...
