Morning, Rusty!
Goodness, I must have been tired last night! I went to bed about 11 pm (very early for me!) and didn't get up this morning until 7.15 am! Usually I'm awake after about 5 hours sleep!
I didn't know any of that information you told me about the trail pioneers, and also about the kidnapping of Cynthia Parker.
That poor woman - I'm not surprised she didn't want to be "rescued" after all so many years. Whatever the initial circumstances - the pillaging and killing of her family? - the Comanches had become her 'family' over all those years. They had adopted her into the tribe and raised her from a child. She even married and had children with one of them.
Do you know anything of her background? Did she become 'steeped' in their way of life? What happened when they went on a 'raid' - did she accept this ? did she become a part of their way of living? I suppose she must have done, being with them from so young an age?
Have you read a book about her?
A nice day here, but chilly now in the early mornings!

Hello, Elle!
I have not been out but it seems a nice day!
Meeting a granddaughter at 12!
Sorry, my head has lots of info about different things which would interest very few! Cattle trails are one of them. The books of James Michener laid the foundations and I started digging. Michener was a historical novelist. He was a clever man. He was in a "think tank" for at least one US president and a close friend of the Polish Pope. I get mixed up with the names of Popes! He was also asked to come up with a method or tests to identifying potential breakers of the Japanese naval codes after Pearl Harbour.
Cynthia had it tough. In effect, she was kidnapped twice.
She did not want to leave the Comanche. They had become her family.
Comanche "raids". We are usually told about them from only from the "white" point of view. Winners write the history to suit themselves.
The reality was, their land was being stolen, their way of life abused, and that included attempts at extermination, and they fought to prevent that.
The Native Americans were treated dreadfully.
The film "Searchers" may have it"s origin in Cynthia's story. I do not know.
But, we know for certain that her life was devastated twice. Poor girl!
Keep them "dogies" moving! "Dogies" is in Chambers!
On a cheerier note, I am looking forward to my bacon roll today!

Hi rusty/elle
When Americans talk about ethnic cleansing they seem to forget that is exactly what they did to Native American Indians,They were barbarous

Hello everyone !

Nice morning here, bright and sunny.

Regarding the Red Indians, I personally think that us all Europeans behaved terribly towards them; It was not far from being a genocide and I don't understand what gave our ancestors the right to 'civilize' the different tribes - In a way, they were more civilized than most european folks at that time ! They simply had beliefs and customs we did not understand, that's all - why not respect them !

They were more clever than us when it came to surviving in the Wild West - hence the 4th July when the colons gave a party to thank the Indians for their help during the first year (food wise), before the White Men could have their first harvest. If it had not been for the Indians, the Colons would have starved.

I think we behaved very badly with the Red Indians and it was criminal to give them Whiskey too - they can't cope with the stuff - it has many times more effect on them than on a White man.

Sorry but this is one of my pet subjects - I am resolutely on the side of the Genuine North
Americans and he idea that they are 'parked' in reserves revolts me.

Hi, Rusty!
It is good that your head is filled with a lot of information! And I find the things that you tell me very interesting!
While they might not necessarily be something that I previously have thought about, that is all to the good.......my horizons are consequently widening and I am learning new things!
I agree with you that History in many instances is written from the viewpoint of the writer.... perhaps not necessarily always, I am sure there must be some impartial historians?
But the Native Americans were certainly treated abominably.
All I know about "The Searchers" (apart from John Wayne being in it) is that it was based on a book written by Alan le May? I've never read it though.
Knowing the propensity of Chambers 13th edition to 'omit' words (all 500 of them!), I have just checked on "dogies"....yes, it is there ..." a motherless calf."
We are going to go out within the next half hour.... enjoy your outing with your granddaughter (which one?)
Enjoy your (fifteen rashers?) bacon roll!

Doglet, how are the after effects of the flood? Was there much residual damage?
When it happened to us, we had to replace the dining room carpet!

Dearie me, I have stirred emotions today about the Comanche!
And it did not only happen in America.
The plight of the native people of Australia being exterminated, was/is every bit as bad!

Elle, it is my oldest granddaughter who is collecting me today. Possibly with her brother.
Sunday is usually my day of rest from shaving, but not today. Must look my bestest for the young ones.
Street cred etc!
Young ones. Very pleased to read of 17 year old Brooke Henderson, the Canadian golfer.
She is taking a 5 stroke lead into the final day of the ladies PGA competition. Great!

Hi elle
We were very lucky our kitchen flooring is sealed to the units and the floor was under about 3" of water so we brushed most of it up and then used old towels to dry it ,so everything is ready for Tuesday I had forgotten how tedious washing up is.I have just finished my book on the Seymour family(Jane Seymour)and am starting one on Agincourt apparently 3,000+french knights and squires died and 2,000+soldiers but our casualties were between 9 to 33!!!
