Elle, there was no Uncle Joe's that I recall.
I associate Uncle Joe with Stalin!
Pomfret! That was in my head!
Did you ever get McCowan's Highland Toffee?
I got one each Saturday with the sugar ration coupon.
I have managed a crossword on Saturday and one yesterday. Hope to get round to doing one today.
I am going out now, and may be some time, as the man said, depending on who I meet.
It was the city's local football derby last night and there will be differing viewpoints!
2-2, so honours even and no bragging rights!
And I must see how the snow shovels sales are doing!

Hi, Rusty!
Are you back yet? How was your walk?
No, I haven' t heard of McCowan's toffee?
I don't recall sugar rationing? I suppose it must have been happening around me - when did rationing end? Maybe I was just that bit too young to remember?
My dad used to come home on a Friday with a 'twist' of sweets for us! only on Fridays and I was only allowed a very few as a treat.
I keep getting popups on the desk top about Windows 10. Is this happening to you?
I was under the impression that Windows updates are always 'free'? I've never previously had to pay for an update.
However, this 'ad' or reminder or whatever it is, says that I must 'reserve' my 'free' instalment of Windows 10 now, or I might have to pay for it a later date?????
It says to reserve it and then I'll be informed when it's ready to download - which I can then choose to do at any time?
.......oh, forgot to ask after the snow shovels?!

re: Windows 10
The offer is that anyone who currently uses any version of Widows 7 or Windows 8.1 can install the final version of Windows 10 without cost (Free)
This offer is good during the first year after Windows 10 is released.
There are no other costs associated with this offer. You can use Windows 10 for the full support lifecycle, just like any other version of Windows.
It does NOT mean that, after one year, you will be required to purchase another version of Windows 10 or pay any other fee.

PPS If you do not activate the free upgrade within the 12 months of the release date, then , you will have to pay a one time fee,

Thank you for that info, Jazzy!
But why suddenly are we having to PAY for updates?Since I was dragged "kicking and screaming" into the 21st century by my daughters, who insisted that I learn to use the computer, I have never yet had to pay for an update?
Going out now... will look in to see if you've replied when I get back.....

You only have to pay if you don't upgrade within the year, Elle

Elle, you do NOT have to pay for Windows 10.
It is a free update.
After a year, if you have not updated, you may have to pay.
Yes, you are just a young thing so you would not remember the sugar rationing! Only a guess but I would think it came off the ration about 1950?
I have had numerous texts and a couple of phone calls from Donegal today.
The Leaving Cert results are out and there is great excitement sweeping the land!
All the young ones are very happy with their grades etc and plans are being made for Trinity etc!
Now, crosswords.
I am getting increasingly annoyed with the parochial attitudes of The Times setters. I know I shall be in a minority, but that has never stopped me!
Yesterday in The Times, 26174.
1 across.
Somewhere in East London mother going back out to lunch(7-3)
I have the answer as "barking mad" for "out to lunch".
Mother going back is dam=mad.
Barking, apparently, is a burgh in London.
I think it unreasonable for the setter to expect folk to know the names of bits of London.
The Times is sold in countries all over the world and I am certain a huge percentage of folk will never have heard of Barking.
This happens regularly in The Times.
So, is it fair, d'ye think?

Hi Rusty,

Hope all is fine up North !

I tend to agree with you re. Crosswords - It is quite difficult for me at times to know if what I have worked out exists or not; Google helps a lot, and I always check the Forum in case someone has already asked for help on that clue.

When I skype my friends in the evening, we discuss the Crosswords but they live in Cumbria and there are lots of places in London (or elsewhere) they don't. know either
