Hello, Elle!
Sounds like a great day out, you had!
You will be tired with all your scampering about!
Keeps you young keeping up with the young ones.
Or, trying to!
I am sure I have heard of Lulworth and the commandeered land. Am I right in thinking there were many killed there practising for the Normandy landings? Thousands? There is a wee bell ringing!
Live ammunition was used?
Slaggan.
As far as I know it was abandoned for economic reasons. It is only a very short distance from Destitution Road, which the local people took to during the Clearances and well into the last century.
The last family left Slaggan when their house burned down, during the last war, I think. Locals will tell you that Royal Navy may have had something to do with it. Slaggan is on Loch Ewe, where Naval convoys gathered during both wars. The beach at Slaggan has a steep drop-off. Very dangerous for swimming. It's the little wrens I remember best there, and that I was in second gear all the way along the track to the village. Not a soul for miles and total silence, and at one time there would be children's laughter. Sad!

No, Elle, it was at Slapton Sands in Devon the troops were killed. I read about this many years ago.
Around a thousand Americans were killed.

Hi, Rusty!
I think you must be thinking of what happened in Devon?
The British government set up a training ground at Slapton Sands in Devon, to be used by the American forces. About 3,000 local inhabitants were evacuated in order to use this locality.
It was during the first practice assault - Exercise Tiger - that there was an incident involving friendly fire.
I can't remember the ins-and-outs, though - something to do with a timing mistake and ships crossing a white tape line? I don't know how many casualties there were
I shall have to look this up later - maybe tomorrow? - and see what I can find out.......

Tomorrow is the boys' last day! We shall miss them! They have asked us if they can stay longer but this won't be possible as the elder grandson is going on a residential activity week from August 15th.
PGL Activity Centre? have you heard of this?

Hello, Elle!
Yes, crossed posts.
I saw the memorial to the Americans.
There were 946 killed. Apparently Eisenhower insisted on using live ammo to get the troops used to fire.
This went on.
I know they used live ammo at Achnacarry in the Highlands when training the Commandos.
Men were killed there, too, but I do not know how many.
Yes, you will miss your boys! They shall leave with fond memories though, and that is irreplaceable.
Not heard of PGL?
Maybe Mr Google has?
It seems very warm here.
Time to hit the Fogartys!

It's extremely warm here, too! I think we shall have the fan on......otherwise it might be difficult to sleep.
"Hit the Fogartys"! I like it!
"Night, night, sleep tight , don't let the bugs bite!"

Good morning, Elle!
Was a warm night here.
Feels warm now, but I havs not been out yet.
Accuweather agrees with me, though!
Have the boys and you any adventures planned for today?
I had a look at PGL. Lots of info on Internet.
Seems to be a great experience for young lads.

Good morning, Rusty!
Yes, it was a muggy night- we had the fan on.
There was some thundery rain at 4am., but it hasn't cleared the atmosphere...still 'heavy' this morning.
We are going to a Garden Centre out in Kent this morning. We have some hanging baskets on the walls of the house around the side and back. I want to transplant some of the fuchsias from there into the bigger patio pots and buy new plants for the baskets.
For some reason I cannot get fuchsias to grow in the main garden - I've tried different 'soils' but nothing seems to work.....so we grow them in pots on the patio.
I may get a few other plants as well for the flower beds around the lawn. We shall see.....
I thought the boys would enjoy doing some planting on our return home!
There is a Toby Carvery near the garden centre, and they love going there - so that is our lunch time plan!
Do you have Toby Carveries near you? I think they have them across most of the UK?

Hello, Elle!
Well you have a full day ahead of you!
Ask at the gardens why your fuchsia wont grow in the garden. Is "Gardeners Question Time" still on the wireless? They could help. Maybe they do emails now?
Toby Carvery? No, I have not heard of that.
Is it a tattooing shop?
I would not encourage that, Elle. They all look horrible, I think.
Why not buy the boys quite a tricky jigsaw puzzle, to do when they visit you? I am sure Amazon will have them!

Hi, Rusty!
I suppose you might get a tattoo after you've eaten your roast meat, veggies and potatoes........?
You should try googling the Toby Carvery - I'm sure they will have one around your area - it's a reasonably priced meal - you could take the girls there?
We do have jigsaw puzzles galore! Mind you, they would be happy to get yet another one......I have a range of toys and games for them here - the Boot Fairs at the farm are quite good for that!
The dog should be back soon from her morning walk - you will have gathered that I am at home today looking after the grandkids!
Then we shall go out to the garden centre - it is quite a lovely drive there , as it's out in the countryside.
Have a good day!
