I have heard ‘outwith’ used, but only by Scots. I take it to mean, roughly, ‘outside’ or ‘away from’. Similarly, I have noticed that Scots use ‘stay’ to indicate where someone lives permanently, whereas we southerners use it to indicate a temporary situation.
At last my time watching Take the High Road has proved useful!
Incidentally the Channel 5 programme on scamming has been on all of this week, I believe.

The Channel 5 programme on scams is at 8pm tomorrow ,in most areas. There is slso a serial "Cold Call" but that appears to be a drama ?

Hi, Rusty!
I have been out walking the dog..... and then arrived home to find my computer was "frozen"!
I think it was just an outlandish coincidence...and nothing to do with "scams"!
I switched everything off - had to unplug the tower at the back.
I've left it for a while and hopefully it all seems okay now....
But if I do 'disappear' again, you will know why!!
Yes, I have Channel 5...I shall investigate !
I haven't done my puzzle today .. as my emails have been down.
I am shattered......modern technology is definitely "not my thing"!
I need a (strong) coffee!

Hello, Elle!
I sometimes get glitches on my Sky TV system and unplugging it for a couple of minutes always fixes it.
Maybe your emails will arrive now your computer is unfrozen?
The Channel 5 programme is also going to have folk on it who have fallen for the scams.
Should be interesting, if not distressing.

Kenyatta, I use "outwith" regularly, to mean "away from" or "outside".
Never realised it was mainly a Scottish thing, though!

Good evening, Rusty!
I am now feeling somewhat restored!
And yes, I can now access my emails.....I shall need to spend the next half hour, answering a few queries, and explaining and apologising for my silence throughout the day!
I've also been stood up for lunch tomorrow, as sadly my friend has had a bad fall.
Nothing broken fortunately, but she is badly bruised.
I shall ring her shortly to enquire how she is doing.
I have set the recorder for the Channel 5 programme tomorrow - a good idea to find out what they have to say.
Are you son and his wife safely home now?

Hello, Elle!
A pity about your friend.
'Phoning her is a good idea, I think.
Yes, Channel 5 programme will be interesting.
Now, speaking of scams!
Remember my cheap Casio watch?
I have requested my money back as I fear it is a counterfeit.
It is losing 6 seconds a day.
So, in 6 months, say, it would be several minutes slow.
The advert says it is Made in Japan but the watch is stamped Made in Malaysia.
eBay have told me they will get involved on the 28th, if it has not been resolved by then.
So far, not a word from the seller!
Yes, my family are back from Skye.
They had a very good time, walking mostly.
My daughter-in-law is back at work tomorrow.
She is a nurse in the local hospital.

Hi, Rusty!
I have sent my friend a return email, saying how sorry I am to hear what has happened, and promising to phone her tomorrow morning, when she is hopefully feeling a bit recovered.
She may well have fallen asleep now, and I should to wake her up by the telephone ringing!
I am sorry that you think your watch is not genuine......but losing six seconds a day is surely not a big deal?
You could just adjust the watch at the end of the week (or even month) and you would never know the difference!
But yes.......it is the principle that counts!
I do hope you can sort it out.
Now...... cap this for a rip-off!
On Remembrance Sunday (November 10th) we went with our daughter and family to their local Toby Carvery for lunch.... the restaurant was full and those of us still queuing were politely turned away.
The procedure for parking is to enter one's car Reg. no. in the machine by the booking desk, when being allocated one's table.
However, we never even made it as far as the booking desk, we were turned away at the door to the restaurant.
So we went back to our car and drove away.
And today, we have received a fine for £85 for "unauthorised parking" for 15 minutes (plus a few seconds) in the Toby Carvery car park!!!
To say that the air was blue when I read the letter, detailing the parking fine, this afternoon is putting it mildly!

Hello, Elle!
Yes, best leave your friend in peace until the morning.
No, 6 seconds is no big deal at all, but it is one of the classic tests of a fake Casio watch.
I will not be adjusting it at all.
I'll let eBay sort it out.
I have not heard of that parking system that Toby uses.
Do they have a right to fine you? By who's authority?
Do they have signs up alerting drivers to their penalties?
I think I would resist paying.

Hi, Rusty!
We have the same system of car parking at our own local Carvery here.
It is run by Euro Car Parks and works on a camera system.
The cameras pick up on the car numbers in the parking area and these are checked off against the car registration numbers entered into the machine in the restaurant.
But, as I said, one only gets to enter one's car Reg. no when one reaches the desk.....
We were turned back at the door!
Yes, I assume that the ECP has the authority to fine people who have intentionally parked there without paying.....
But 15 minutes queuing and then being turned away without dining there on the premises, and without the opportunity even to register one's car number, does not qualify for a fine!
No, we shall not be paying!
But such is bureaucracy, that we now have to go through an "Appeal" system!
I tried phoning ..they won't take phone calls; the online Complaints system is down; so I have written a stiff letter, which I shall post in the morning!
