Elle, well done on doing today's crossword so quickly. It took me ages and I felt very dense at times. It confirms (I hope!) that we all cope differently with the various setters.

I'm with Rusty on 'one' and 'won' sounding the same - to me, they both sound like 'wun' (fun, run etc). I've tried saying them differently, but can't!

Good morning everyone!

For what it's worth coming from a foreigner, we were taught
to pronounce one and won slightly differently, with 'ONE' being
pronounced more like 'WAN' than 'WON'.

Having said that, I have checked the phonetic spelling of both
ONE and WON and they are both written in same way, (with WAN
being spelt differently.)
Yet it goes against what I heard when British people say the
two words ONE and WON - Could it be due to regional pronunciation?

I spent a lot of time during college years near Oxford (whenever I had a
college holiday in fact), ie during my learning years, when the ear
gets tuned in the local accent.

Pigale, I expect you're right about the regional pronunciations. Rusty and I are often the ones (!) who're slightly at odds with the pronunciations referred to in crosswords. It was quite nice today to have one that matched my pronunciation.

Hello, again, Elle!
Just in from dentist.
Crown successfully re-cemented.
Only took her a couple of minutes to fix.
She had a nice holiday in Manchester and Leeds.
Now, the bad news....Greggs has closed down.
It was a good shop and looked like it did a thriving trade.
Now, my old Chambers has the pronunciation "wun", for both "won" and "one".
That is my way too.

Hello, Malone!
The two words "one" and "won" are pronounced the same to me.
Maybe Elle is using Boltonese or Bromleyspeak pronunciation!

Hello, Pigale!
Everyone I know pronounces "one" and "won" identically.
If there is a difference, it could be a regional thing, as you suggest.
The Korean "won" is pronounced differently, I think.

Hi, Rusty!
I am home again temporarily!
I go back for the dog at 12.30pm
By which time she will be trimmed and clean.......and raring to go find something smelly and dirty in which to roll!
She is a regular tomboy!
Now "won" I pronounce as "wun" ....
But "one" I say as it is pronounced out loud online by the Cambridge dictionary........
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/one
Have a listen!
I was doubtful about your priorities, but hoped for your sake that Gregg's was still open...
i am sorry to hear that it has now closed down!
You will miss it!
I am glad that your dentist was able to refix your crown!

Malone. do not be impressed by my " very quick" solving of the crossword!
I was up at 6 am as usual...and did not take the dog out for an early walk this morning, as she was going to the Groomers, and the times would clash.
So I had plenty of time in which to solve the puzzle!
Although, yes, I did seem to be on the same wavelength as the setter today!

Hello, Pigale!
Yes, I, too, have always heard the two words said slightly differently.
And at least the Cambridge online "said out loud" dictionary agrees with my pronunciation of "one"!
See link in post to Rusty.
We have blue sky and sunshine.... and a tolerable temperature.
How about that!

P.S. Rusty!
I've just read what you said to Malone....it's a good job you are out of hitting range!

Good afternoon, Elle!
I only went into Greggs occasionally, but I shall miss it.
It had very good products, and cheery bantering staff.
I am well out of hitting range, thankfully!
I disapprove of violence, in any case.
Especially against me!
How are your builders coming along?
