Update, Elle,
Think I have it.
One-time is "ex".
Judgement is "conclusion"
Remove "con/prisoner"
And "exclusion" is left.
???

Drat, Rusty, I was waiting a few minutes before posting the conclusion/exclusion thing!

Ah, Malone, I had an idea you would have nailed it!
It is fairly obvious now I have twigged it.

Rusty, they're always obvious - afterwards!

I don't mean to be ageist/agist… but is your Chambers an old one? Mine is the Revised 13th Edition and there's no sign of 'agism', just 'ageism', as Elle said earlier. Maybe 'agism' got jettisoned?

Hello, Malone1
Mine is the 10th edition (from eBay)!
And...I have discovered I am havering!
It has only "ageism", not "agism".
Goodness knows how I thought that!
But Wiki seems to think there are two spellings.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ageism

I'll see if Collins has "agism".

Rusty, I was just curious about 'agism' disappearing - not checking up on your dictionary skills! And although Chambers is often regarded as the crossword 'Bible', other dictionaries are sometimes used - the Oxford Dictionary of English, Collins and so on.

"Agism" appears to be the American spelling.

Hi, Rusty!
Yes, our posts crossed......
How lovely to have all four granddaughters with you today!
And you were only saying the other day that you hadn't seen much of Miss ATW lately!
You must have "conjured" her up!
Yes, I thought that Miss O must start school fairly soon; my cousin's grandson always goes back mid-August.
I am annoyed about 25a and 4d..... I so very nearly had the answers, didn't I?
I just couldn't quite put it all together......
I have rechecked my ill-fated Chambers....but no, it does not give "agism" as an alternative spelling to "agEism"...... although it offers aging and agEing!
Good luck to Katie in the European Pursuit!

Hello, Malone.
Collins has "agism" in second paragraph.

Rusty, thanks for the Oxford link. Merriam Webster and Collins both have 'agism', but don't list it as American. One just says 'a less common spelling'.
