The story of the Brambley's seedling is much the same, except the girl who found that had planted pips in Nottingham, while the Granny Smith was a chance find in Australia.
Did anyone else grow pips as a child? I think my apple pips only grew because my mother didn't want them in the house so they over-wintered in the garden which is what they need (whose mother would have allowed them in the fridge?) and my father found them looking for some pots. Didn't keep them long enough to see what the apples were like, though.

I've never tried growing fruit from pips Ros, but my husband had a habit of planting tiny saplings which grew out of control such as the Leylandii, and a Maple sapling which is now a massive tree higher than the house and and cost me over £400 to have it pruned last year

I think Leylandii should need planning permission!

Only eating apple I really like is Egremont Russet. I have Bramleys for baking

I only eat Granny Smith apples...as said before the start of all this discussion!
I read in Wikipedia that the "Granny Smith" apple started from the remains of French crab apples that Maria Ann threw out onto the compost heap...........
Back in the late 1960s, The Beatles used an image of a Granny Smith apple as the logo for their corporation, Apple Corps Limited.

Good morning, Elle!
I remember the Beatles logo.
I often wondered if they had a link to Apple.
I am wary of stuff on Wikipedia unless it can be backed up by proper evidence.
Most Wikipedia entries will be accurate, but I think many are debatable.
It is still windy here but a lovely day and I am off out with my gloves in my pocket.
It is not warm!

A Very good morning to you, Rusty!
A glorious day here - bright blue sky and sunshine, with a crisp breeze to invigorate me on my walk!
( But only 8 degrees though)
I didn't want to come home!
I think you must have been right the first time, when you said yesterday evening that Tom Petty had died following his cardiac arrest.
I heard on the car radio this morning that he had died at 8.40 pm?
That would have fit in time wise, with what you had heard then.
How old was he?
Yes, you may well need gloves! I had my hands in my pockets this morning!
Where are you off to?
