24A - Girl writing paper in college (6) ?L?I?E. I have CLAIRE - CLARE being the college but has anyone heard of I for writing paper - possibly abbreviation for Indian paper but a bit 'loose'!

Isn't this a poor crossword? It would be impossible without Google (unless you lived in 17d, or were involved in 20d, perhaps).

It appears that today is the 300th anniversary of the event referred to in the crossword - still doesn't make it fair, though - it took quite a lot of Googling to confirm that.

Of course, thanks for that chrisg & to all others who suggested the same. As usual, I was thinking too much 'out of the box'. Have to agree that the theme was a bit obscure this week though! I can now move on to the Times & Times Jumbo.

I agree, chrise, I didn't enjoy this. I don't mind using Google to confirm an answer that I've already worked out but, like you, I had to use Google to get 2d and then guess (and Google) 8,6. Oh well......
